As the year draws to an end we are still no closer to knowing when we will be able to resume our face to face group activities.  Normally, we would have started the membership renewal process for the coming year at the beginning of November 2020 for the subscription year which runs from 1st January to 31 December 2021.
But, because Cheadle U3A has been effectively closed since March 2020, we, your committee, have decided to extend your current 2020 membership to 31st December 2021.  There will therefore be no need for you to renew your membership on the 1st January 2021 and your 2020 card will be valid for the whole of 2021

If you pay your subscription by standing order you will need to cancel it, or if this is not possible, you can request a refund from our Treasurer, Marion Corbishley, by either, writing to her and enclosing a stamped self-addressed envelope, or by waiting until the Wednesday coffee mornings resume and speaking to her in person. In 2020 your £10 subscription to Cheadle U3A was spent as follows:
£3.50 to the Third Age Trust (provides  insurance cover and advice),  £3.10 for your Third Age Trust magazine, £3.20 for printing and posting the Spring and Autumn  Cheadle U3A newsletters and the remainder on general administration (photocopier etc). We will pay your membership fee to the Third Age Trust for 2021 to ensure that we have continuity of insurance cover.

The Charity Commission require that we carry a contingency to cover our operating costs for one year in the event of an unforeseen circumstance.  We will use part of the reserves for this purpose.

We will not be subscribing to the Third Age Trust magazine during 2021.  The February 2021 issue will therefore be the last that you will receive.  If you wish to continue to receive the magazine you may request to do so by writing to:   Alan Mendelson, Cheadle U3A Membership Secretary, Greensance, The Orchard,Alton,Stoke on Trent. enclosing a cheque for £3.10 made payable to “Cheadle (Staffs) U3A”. 
Please make sure that you identify yourself clearly with your full name and address or membership number and that the cheque addressee wording is exactly as shown above.

The AGM, which should have been held in April 2020 has been postponed until it is safe to hold it in person.  The committee did debate whether to hold it by Zoom , as other local U3As have done, but felt that there were still  too many members without the internet to be able give everyone the opportunity to attend.

You may be aware that Chris Brown, our Chairman, has stepped down from the committee and Jenny Crump, (previously Vice –Chair)  has taken over this role.  All other committee members have volunteered to remain in place  until the re-scheduled AGM.  Alan Mendelson is, however, starting the process of taking over the role of Membership Secretary from Val Egerton.
We have welcomed three new volunteers for committee, Alan Mendelson, Marj Povey and Trish Bolt.  On advice from the Charity Commission these people are allowed to join the committee until we hold our next AGM. 

You will see from our Home web page that membership is open to all ‘Third Agers’, that is anyone who is retired or semi-retired.

If you wish to join Cheadle U3A, please complete the New Members Application form which can be printed off below (click here) and send it to the address provided, together with your membership fee of £10.  You will be sent a membership card and a ‘Guide for Members’, you will then be able to join any of the group activities by contacting the appropriate Group Leader in the first instance, to ensure there are vacancies.

The membership application form also includes a Gift Aid declaration which allows tax to be claimed back on your annual subscription.  Please complete this to help us keep our subscription fee at its current low level. 

A reciprocal agreement with our Neighbourhood U3As enables members of Cheadle U3A to participate in group activities of participating neighbouring U3As without having to pay an addition membership fee and vice versa.  However, you are advised to check the U3A you are interested in is a participating one. 

The Membership year runs from January 1st to December 31st.  Membership renewal forms will be sent to you by post in the Cheadle U3A Autumn newsletter.  Using this form, your membership can be renewed at the November, December or January Cheadle U3A coffee mornings which are held in the Guild hall, Cheadle on the second Wednesday of every month (except August) from 10 am until 12 noon, or you can renew by post but you must include a stamped, self-addressed envelope.
