The name of the group more or less describes what I am trying to do. Each week the group is treated to a DVD of music which may be an opera, a ballet or a programme about a composer or a particular work. There will be,normally,a short introduction by me unless there is introductory material on the DVD and we then sit back and enjoy the music. I do not necessarily wish to restrict the programme to opera, ballet and other classical works, although these genres will be the mainstay of the group, certainly in the short term. At some stage we may look occasionally at musicals or jazz. This depends to some extent on the availability of the required DVD’s from the Third Age Trust Resource Centre. Many of the works are DVD’s of live performances from places such as the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Glyndebourne, Met Opera etc.

There is no restriction on numbers since the group meets in the Guildhall. Those who regularly attend tell me they are enjoying being in the group.

If you have an interest in and enjoy watching and listening to music of these genres then come along. Even if you have no background in this type of music or wish to try it out or improve your knowledge a little then please give it a try. My own appreciation and enjoyment is more or less purely sensual. At £1 a throw you can’t really go wrong. There is obviously no compulsion and if you find it’s not for you then fine but give it a go. We now have a brand new computer and a sound bar and sub woofer which have enhanced both the watching and listening experience considerably.
